Do information-theoretic measures of word-processing difficulty explain psycholinguistic phenomena?

چکیده

It has been proposed that cognitive processing effort at each word in a sentence depends on the amount of information conveyed by the word. Indeed, two formal measures of word information (surprisal and entropy reduction) correlate with reading times on words in general texts. If word information also accounts for psycholinguistic phenomena that have been taken as evidence for particular cognitive processes, these phenomena may need to be reinterpreted. A range of simple recurrent networks and phrase-structure grammars was used to estimate surprisal and entropyreduction scores for the parts-of-speech of sentence stimuli from five experiments, concerning relative clause processing, local ambiguity, digging-in effects, and grammaticality illusions. None of the information measures predicted any critical experimental result, except for the SRN-based surprisals, which predicted the grammaticality illusion. This shows that many psycholinguistic findings are indeed indicative of cognitive effects beyond ’mere’ information-based processing difficulty.

Psycholinguistic Models of Sentence Processing Improve Sentence Readability Ranking

While previous research on readability has typically focused on document-level measures, recent work in areas such as natural language generation has pointed out the need of sentence-level readability measures. Much of psycholinguistics has focused for many years on processing measures that provide difficulty estimates on a word-by-word basis. However, these psycholinguistic measures have not y...

Probabilistic Models of Word Order and Syntactic Discontinuity

This thesis takes up the problem of syntactic comprehension, or parsing—how an agent (human or machine) with knowledge of a specific language goes about inferring the hierarchical structural relationships underlying a surface string in the language. I take the position that probabilistic models of combining evidential information are cognitively plausible and practically useful for syntactic co...

Developing a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity

Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...

Do Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

Probabilistic Record Type Lattices for Incremental Reference Processing

This chapter addresses the issue of incorporating probabilistic type-theoretic inference into an incremental dialogue framework, using processing of referring expressions (that is, their interpretation and generation) as a test case. Within our framework, we model reference processing in a psycholinguistically plausible way– that is, in a strictly left-to-right, word-by-word, incremental fashio...
